Your answers to our question - Are you ever 'Too Old' to own a dog?

Pippin was a retirement present to myself and we picked her up on my 65th birthday. Neither of us had ever owned a dog before and to say we were nervous newbie parents is an understatement. We were meticulous in doing our homework, choosing the right breed for us and reading all the right books. It took a while for us to realise that Pippin had not read the same books and had a mind of her own. She is a product of a cockapoo father and a Cavapoo mother and was chosen because she was unlikely to shed and she would not grow too large for us to manage.
Pippin has been a revelation and despite a few misadventures and traumas we have all survived. She is now ten years old and slowing down a bit (as are we). She has been a fabulous, if demanding companion who seldom has been apart from us. She has provided a focus for me in my retirement and has kept me fit and flexible as we walk at least two hours every day and enjoy the local countryside. A bonus is that she is a super affectionate and friendly dog who just loves people and this has made us friends in the village and a reason to talk to people we meet out and about. She has a way with people and an amazing instinct for approaching total strangers when they are feeling low and sad and bringing a smile to their faces. I'd have loved for her to have become a therapy dog but she has always been a touch excitable to do this formally.
