It’s a sobering diagnosis as Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a serious condition that reduces a dog's capacity to remove waste products from their blood. This leads to a build-up of toxins in the body which affects behaviour and health.
As CKD develops, managing the condition through your dog’s diet becomes essential. With the right nutrition, you can usually help slow the progression of CKD, reduce symptoms, and improve your dog’s quality of life.
The good news
Dogs are born with far more filtering power than they need. Even if your dog’s kidney function is only 25% of normal, that remaining portion can often still meet the body’s needs.
The kidneys have a built-in reserve capacity, and our goal is to help maximize the performance of the healthy kidney tissue that remains. By supporting and maintaining normal kidney function in those surviving nephrons (kidney cells), we give the body a chance to keep up with its demands.
A prescription diet is the first step
Petfood manufacturers provide specialist diets for dogs with CKD with the emphasis is on a lower protein and phosphorous content.
High protein diets, but especially those high in meat protein, can worsen CKD by increasing the kidneys’ workload. Excessive protein can cause the kidneys to filter more waste products, including nitrogenous waste like urea, which puts additional stress on compromised kidneys.
Elevated phosphorus levels in the blood are one of the hallmarks of CKD. As kidney function declines, the kidneys lose their ability to excrete phosphorus efficiently

Even the best renal diets still contain 1% phosphorous, more than CKD compromised kidneys can deal with.
Why do I need a phosphate binder?
That means that the blood phosphate level rises far above the level needed for healthy bones and metabolism. Excess phosphate is very harmful, especially for the heart and circulation.
Even a low phosphorous renal diet food has about 1% of phosphorous in it: too much for CKD compromised kidneys.
The binders function by attaching to phospate present in food in the intestine, thus reducing its absorption into the bloodstream, and consequently reducing the workload of the kidneys. Usually, once started, they are given permanently.
Directions/Feeding
Sprinkle one scoop for every 10kg of your dog's weight daily on their meal.
The RenalGuard pot is 150g and contains over 100 level scoopfuls. The pot will last a small dog nearly 4 months and an average sized dog (20kg) 2 months
If feeding dry kibble it may help palatability to dampen the kibble.
