Omega 3 fatty acids are called “essential” fatty acids because we must ensure that our dog’s diet contains adequate amounts for health.  Our dogs simply cannot manufacture enough themselves and so are totally reliant on the diet we feed. Any shortfall - and our pets cannot function at their optimum or reach their full potential.
Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil as EPA and DHA, have become increasingly popular in response to a growing body of scientific evidence of their health benefits. Research has demonstrated that omega-3 fatty acids are essential for normal growth and neurological development of both puppies and adult dogs.
Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in the prevention of numerous diseases such as cardiovascular disease, inflammation of joints, and auto-immune conditions. They are also known to play a role in both increasing learning and in reducing mental decline and senility.

Do I need to feed Omega 6 oils as well


Omega 6 fatty acids are found in animal sources (like fish oils but also in meat) as well as in plant sources (flax,sunflower etc).  With the abundance of omega 6 fatty acids in both raw and prepared dog foods, it's not necessary to supplement it .

Because the two types of Omega (3 and 6) are actually in direct competition when it comes to metabolism, the balance between the two is important so you only need to supplement for omega 3 fatty acids .
